Post Traumatic Growth Can Help

One of the problems of failure in one area of your life, say the loss of a job, is that it can put a lot of strain on other areas, too. Your marriage may suffer. Because you aren't earning any money, you may lose your house. Almost certainly, you'll find that you have to sell things to make ends meet.
Back in January of this year, on a worldwide basis, 70,000 people lost their jobs in a single days, while 50,000 to 60,000 lost their jobs on each of the ten days following. But of course, it needn't be something as big and drastic as job loss or a house foreclosure. One way to keep yourself from brooding on failure is to keep your life multi-dimensional. Have plenty of interests so that if you have a failure in one area of your life, there are plenty of other areas which are doing quite well.
Equally, can you really call it failure if you lose your job? More than likely, it isn't through any fault of your own that it happened. It's arguable that you could have seen it coming, in which case it's equally arguable that perhaps you could have done something about it, but what? Found a new job in this sort of market? Unlikely in the extreme.
The only thing about losing your job is that it does open up new opportunities. There's a sort of 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' aspect about it.
There's little doubt that failure's vital for growth. Without mistakes, you don't learn. And you probably don't progress, either. After all, if you're afraid to start anything because you may fail, then you'll be stuck in a rut for the rest of your life.
Psychologists have discovered something they refer to as Post Traumatic Growth. This occurs when very negative sets of circumstances engender high levels of psychological distress causing a major life crisis. Such occurrences produce extremely unpleasant psychological reactions.
Now, apparently, growth doesn't occur as a direct result of this trauma, but it's the person's struggle to deal with this new reality in trauma's aftermath that's crucial in determining the extent to which post-traumatic growth occurs. In other words, you're pushed so close to the abyss, that you're forced to change in some way or the other.
You may be faced with a life-threatening illness and while you simply can't see life past this disability, basically you're forced to sooner or later.
You may have made a monumental blunder, resulting in a huge failure of some kind, probably financial. And this is the whole point. Has this ever happened to you? You sit down and think; 'What in the name of goodness am I to do. I just don't know.' It's then that this Post Traumatic Growth can occur.
Through the new reality, you create by struggling to find a way out.

For most of us, the start of a new year is a time of reflection. A review of the year gone by and an opportunity to set goals for the year ahead. Intentions are good and motivation is high.
Make no mistake. Setting goals is easy. Following through is the hard part. To assist you in seeing those New Year's goals and resolutions come to life, Bywater Consulting Group presents you with:The challenge lies in the predictable loss of steam that ensues as we move past the holiday season and back into our workaday lives.
Liz Bywater's Strategies for Implementation: How to Follow Through on Your New Year's Resolution
1) Review your goals. Keep the important ones. Discard the ones that don't make sense.
2) Prioritize. Decide what requires immediate action, what belongs in the mid-term, and what can be deferred to much later date.
3) Organize. Figure how to best approach the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual tasks entailed in meeting your goals and resolutions for the year. Put a system in place for efficiently attending to each of these tasks.
4) Enlist help. Don't try to tackle it all yourself. Delegate where feasible. Outsource where appropriate.
5) Share the news. Tell someone about your goals and your strategies for reaching them.
6) Create accountability. Set up a system for reporting your progress to someone who's invested in your growth. This can be a business partner, a boss, a peer, or a spouse.
7) Celebrate your successes. When you've made progress toward a goal, recognize it. Take pride. Use it as an incentive to keep moving forward.
8) Get feedback. Ask others how they see you and your progress. Use their input to build upon your strengths and neutralize your weaknesses.
9) Don't obsess. Plan, prepare and then execute. Don't get caught up in over-analyzing or striving for perfection.
10) Give yourself a break. Remember to take the time to relax and refresh yourself. Don't run yourself so ragged that you lose focus, stamina, and creativity. They're vital if you are to reach your goals and see your New Year's resolutions come to life.

Five of the Most Basic Tips on How to Follow Through on Your Goals
As you can imagine, in my line of work as a life coach and executive coach, I regularly come across people who say to me "Every time I set myself goals I never follow them through!" And they ask me for tips on how to do this differently.
Although everyone has their own personal way of doing things, and there's no one answer that works for everyone, I have found that the following suggestions work for many people:
- Be clear to yourself about what your goal actually is; take the time to word it as specifically and as detailed as you can. Strangely this action alone is really powerful in moving you towards your goal.
- If you are able to write down the specifics, the details about your goal, then it is definitely worthwhile re-reading what you've written as often as you can; this could be once a week or once a day, it does not actually matter. The purpose of re-reading your goal is simply to bring it to the forefront of your mind as often as possible.
This is similar to learning a language, maybe you learnt French or Spanish at school; we were taught French in high school, and each time at the start of the class, the teacher would ask us what is the date today, so 30 years later I still remember how to say "The date today is..." in French.
The relevance of this story to your goals is simple: if you think about your goals regularly, you stay very focused and consciously aware of them all the time, which leads you to think about actions and activities to move you closer to your goals. This is essential. There are studies that show that people who are very successful are those who are clear about their goals and know exactly what they want to achieve. Whereas, if you ask every person you meet what are their goals, you will most likely find that most of them have no idea! Therefore, they are not progressing in their lives, they are simply standing still.
- Some people are more visual and prefer to imagine their goals rather than writing them down. This is an excellent practice too; it is as good as writing as long as you remember to go into lots of detail.
- When you visualise your goals or when you re-read your goals, allow yourself to daydream, yes, definitely, this is so very important. Let yourself imagine you are living your goals, as if they're happening to you right now. This is so simple and so powerful, and in the very least it can leave you with a wonderfully good feeling.
- Trust yourself and have confidence in the goals you've chosen for yourself. If you have decided these are what you want then no-one in this world has the right to tell you otherwise. People often feel uncomfortable about their goals, they don't believe in their own goals; if you feel this way then you are not going to be powerfully and confidently focused on achieving what you want.
There are lots more things you could do, yet if this is all you did, and you did it consistently, I am sure you will find yourself taking action more and more in a way that moves you towards your goal. Coaching is mostly common sense, the reason people work with a life coach or an executive coach is sometimes it is easier to do things when we feel we are accountable to someone else.

- Yoga
- Meditation
- Qi gong
- Juggling
- Martial arts
- The altruistic aspects of personal development
Some of the more altruistic elements of personal development have Parallels with some of the world's spiritual tradition. A good example would be, The Eightfold Path of Buddhism which focus on the development of skills such as:
- Right View
- Right Intention
- Right Speech
- Right Action
- Right Livelihood
- Right Effort
- Right Mindfulness
- Right Concentration
- Check out the Parallels
Right View this can be a likened to, open-mindedness, beliefs, continual learning of techniques or methods to expand awareness, thoughtfulness.
Right Intention this can be a likened to defining of one's values or the effort to develop mutually beneficial relationships for the general and greater good.
Right Intentions form a personal development point of view this can be seen as increasing your awareness of your actions and adjusting them for the greater good.
Right Speech, from a personal development view this would be Communication skills. Communications skills may also include your internal dialogue as in positive speech.
Right Action, this can be seen as exercising consideration, personal integrity, exercising wisdom.
Right Livelihood, this would have a relation to lifestyle as I'm enhancing one's quality of life, career, and working in an ethical line of employment etc.
Right Effort, this would relate to discipline commitment
determination persistence.
determination persistence.
Right Mindfulness, can be a likened to thoughtfulness consideration...
... And finally
Right Concentration, can be a likened to clarity, focus, exercising discipline of thoughts.
So where do you start? And what does it take?
Define an area of life you would like to work on...
1 create a vision
2 make a plan
3 action your plan
2 make a plan
3 action your plan
Commit to daily actions targeted towards change
Find a system or programme to facilitate your growth, in some cases this may mean reading the related material, books, websites blogs, in other cases this my mean joining the related clubs or taking courses etc. The main point is to develop a self image complementary to your goal/vision.

There are no instant solutions, quick fixes or magic formulas to personal development - personal growth other then an awareness for the need for personal growth and the desire to grow. Granted that the two above conditions are meet - an awareness of the need for personal growth - and the desire to grow, you will be able to find success with the following tools:
Commitment,
Discipline,
persistence
inquisitiveness
These tools will make a nice starter in your chosen area of personal development/growth.

Here are two typical examples of a personal development exercise:
Example one
Example one
Renewing self images
First in order to realise success in you chosen area of personal development / growth. You need to do two things invest some time to identify and define an area you would like to develop ie you want a promotion

Developing an image of yourself in your finish or ideal state/position -
What you're going to look like
How are you going to feel?
How will you be acting?
Develop you're new self image daily

Example two
The following is an extract from Napoleon hill think and grow rich, Hill is describing the six steps needed to develop what he calls the burning desire needed to drive a person to the accomplishment of their goals. In this example the steps relate to money but with creative editing this formula can be applied to any area of goal attainment.
"First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say, "I want plenty of money." Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness, which will be described in a subsequent chapter). See book Think and grow rich napoleon Hill
Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as "something for nothing.)
Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not to put this plan into action.
Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning.
Napoleon Hill's 13 Success Principles are;
Desire, Faith, Auto-Suggestion, Specialized Knowledge, Imagination, Organised Planning, Decision, Persistence, the Master Mind, Transmutation, the Subconscious Mind, the Brain and the Sixth Sense
Think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill is a must have work -Think and grow rich is overflowing with valuable knowledge
All that man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts."
